Powers/skills: Possesses excellent combat and hunting prowess. He was trained by his father from early childhood as a paranormal investigator and hunter of the supernatural. Well-versed in multiple types of firearms; prefers his Colt 1911 and sawed-off shotgun, but is proficient with most other weapons he might acquire. Also adept at martial arts and knife fighting, and is very physically fit and strong. Proficient tracker; able to 'read' people and manipulate them; conman, hustler, competent at credit card fraud, lock-picking, theft, hot-wiring cars. Can make improvised weapons and explosive devices; has enough knowledge of electronics and reverse engineering to build an electromagnetic field detector from an old Walkman radio. He possesses extensive knowledge of the supernatural and mythology (he isn't as stupid as he can act, but his knowledge is really very specialized.) Knows enough about law enforcement and other service departments to impersonate their members and usually evade them. Good mechanic -- maintains the Impala himself and pretty much rebuilt her from parts after the encounter with the demon truck. Due to his time spent in Hell as Alistair's "student", Dean has an in-depth knowledge of torture, able to inflict the maximum amount of pain and agony on a victim while keeping them alive as long as possible. He also learns very quickly when he needs to -- after seeing Castiel use it once, he memorized the banishing spell that sends angels back to heaven.

Personality: Dean often plays the fool, using humour or rude and even crude behaviour as a defense mechanism to keep people at a distance and/or to make them underestimate him. He has terrible eating habits (though he's trying to improve), drinks, and until he and Castiel got together tended to sleep around. He honestly has no clue how to live a normal life -- his entire life from the age of four has been entangled with Hunting. He can fake it well enough to interact with people, but he wouldn't know how to deal with it on a daily basis. However, he is fiercely loyal and will do ANYTHING to protect his family (especially Sam) and friends. He desperately needs them -- much more than they need him -- and is terrified of losing them, though he doesn't admit to this openly. He already suffered from a deep-seated self-loathing for various perceived failures, and his experiences in Hell only served to exacerbate this. Although he was Saved by Castiel, deep-down, he still doesn't really believe that he deserves it.

History/backstory: Dean was born on January 24, 1979 to John and Mary Winchester. He is the couple's older child, named after his maternal grandmother Deanna Campbell (and possibly himself). After Mary's death at the hands of the Yellow Eyed Demon (Azazel), Dean was raised by his father in the lifestyle of a Hunter, while taking care of and practically raising Sam. He saw his father shoot what he thought was a man (it was actually a shape-shifter) at the age of 4 1/2, and shot his first gun at the age of 6 1/2 (at which point their dad said that Sam didn't have the same kind of killer instinct [as Dean]...) For his 11th birthday, he wanted his own gun. He has never actually lived what could be considered a normal life. The way John raised him has some similarities to growing up inside a cult, resulting in Dean's unquestioning obedience to his father and fierce defense of him against any critics (Sam included, often) even though he's (intellectually) aware that John was a terrible father.

His storyline pretty much follows the series through the end of season three and his time in Hell, although he and Sam encountered Ellina (& Blaise and Tom) in Russia and after Ellina's intervention thought that the Deal had been broken. Unfortunately, Hell wanted/needed him so much after failing to break John Winchester that they were willing to go up against the Russian gods and take him anyway.

He spent 40 years in Hell, fighting for the first 30, then he broke and worked for them for the last 10. Alastair wasn't just taunting when he said they'd been very close in Hell, and this is a source of even more of Dean's self-hatred.

He was Saved by Castiel, and after a while realized that the reason they argued so much was because he was trying to deny the intense attraction he felt towards the angel. They finally acted on their feelings, and Dean realized that he felt far more than just physical attraction. It wasn't something he was used to admitting, but he did, and he and Castiel become bonded. He even promised to forgo any and all other relationships, and cast a ring to give to Castiel as a symbol of their love.

Other: He has a black tattoo on the upper left side of his chest - a pentagram with sun rays surrounding it, to ward off demonic possession. Drives a black four-door hardtop 1967 Chevy Impala (given to him by his father for his 18th birthday), and is a fan of classic rock music and heavy metal. He says his favorite song is a tie between Led Zeppelin's Ramble On and Traveling Riverside Blues. He always wears a metal amulet (although right now Castiel has it on his search for God), given to him as a gift by Sam -- it was supposed to be a gift for their father, but when he didn't show up for Christmas and Dean at least made an effort to give Sam a good Christmas, Sam told him he wanted him to have it. He also wears a ring forged from a fallen star and given to him by Castiel, as a symbol of their relationship and their love. He has a wing kink, which is a much healthier kink than the knife one he tries to deny exists, or the pain one he's afraid to really indulge.
